Laboratory refurbishment at GSK, Barnard Castle

We have successfully completed a £3.1 million project in partnership with John Sisk and Son for GSK at Barnard Castle.

Our teams undertook the mechanical and ventilation works as part of the refurbishment of the 2nd floor laboratories and associated rooms within the L Block of the building.

Delivered over 18 months, this project represents the latest milestone in our longstanding relationship with GSK, where we have provided continuous mechanical services for over 20 years.

Our scope of works included:

  • Ventilation upgrades: Replacement of seven air handling units with energy-efficient models, along with new extract fans, ductwork systems, fire smoke dampers, and air distribution grilles.
  • Fume extraction systems: Installation of two dedicated fume extract systems and accompanying fans to serve the new laboratory areas.
  • Mechanical system modifications: Upgrades to heating, chilled water, and steam systems to accommodate the new ventilation equipment, as well as extending these services to the 2nd floor laboratories for heat recovery units and fan coil units.
  • Laboratory services: Adaptation and installation of hot and cold water systems, vacuum systems, solvent and aqueous drainage, and laboratory furniture.

Additionally, we oversaw specialist subcontractor works, including new laboratory gas systems, a sprinkler system for ceiling-level coverage, Schneider BMS and EMS control systems, bespoke solvent sink tables, and water treatment and balancing.

This project was delivered in collaboration with John Sisk and Son Ltd as Principal Contractor, DTA Consulting Engineers for M&E design, and PH Partnership Architects for architectural services.

This latest project reinforces our reputation as a trusted partner for complex infrastructure upgrades in regulated environments. We continue to support GSK at Barnard Castle with ongoing projects across the site.
